US 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar

1794 flowing hair dollarThe silver dollar that was minted only in the years 1974 and 1975 was the Flowing Hair Dollar. The coin was named for the embodiment of Liberty with free flowing hair found at the obverse side. The coin's design on both sides was made by Robert Scot.

This silver dollar is the first dollar made of silver that was minted by the United States government. This was minted in concurrence to the 1972 Coinage Act at some point in the second year of the United States Mint's operation. The coin lasted for two years only. It is generally acknowledged that about two thousand pieces of Flowing Hair Dollars were created initially with a bit over 1,750 coins truly distributed to the public. The Bust Dollar replaced this design around mid-1975.

The obverse design depicts the Lady Liberty with flowing hair while the reverse design shows a bald eagle which is surrounded by wreath. The free flowing hair was intended to mean or signify freedom. The edge of the coin has a text engraved "Hundred Cents One Dollar Or Unit. It weighs 26.96 grams and has a diameter of 39 to 40 millimeters.  It is composed of 89.25 percent silver and 10.75 percent copper.

Like all other early coins of the US Mint, the Flowing hair dollar has many strains. This is a very sought after silver dollar coin and present day collectors would pay great bonuses for first-rate samples. The single known complete set of this rare coin was officially endorsed by the NGC around 2002. This is considered by a few good men to be the rarest and comprehensive coin collection that ever existed. In recent times, these precious and remarkable coins are particularly hard to get hold of in whatever state and with only a small number of samples making it to the market every year.
